Approaching Death with Equanimity: A Dharma Study Session with Gareth Young and Elizabeth Gibson
Saturday, September 6, 2025, 9:00am to 1:00pm
In Person (Hospital Drive) and on Zoom
In his very first teaching, the Buddha stated that "Birth is stressful, aging is stressful, death is stressful", and he laid out a path - the Noble Eightfold Path - that taught us how we can reduce our suffering by practicing meditation and ethical behavior and by cultivating positive qualities such as generosity, loving-kindness and equanimity. He taught us how we can use our knowledge and experience of aging and death to help us wake up to "the deathless" -- a state in which fear and frustration are replaced by peace of mind and heart.
In this study session, Elizabeth and Gareth will draw on suttas from the Pali canon, the Sutra of Huineng, and other Buddhist materials to share and discuss the Buddha's teachings on aging, sickness, death and dying. We will intersperse our presentations with periods of meditation and discussion, with a short break in the middle. We hope you can join us!
