Ango/Vassa Practice Period (90 Days)
Led by Benjamin Z
Mondays from July 7, 2025 to September 29, 2025
from 5:00AM to 6:15AM
In person at Red Clay Sangha and Online on Zoom
Event Background:
The “Rains Retreat” (also called “Vassa”) is held in Theravadin communities beginning on the full moon of the 8th lunar month and lasting for 90 days. As the name implies, its origin came about as a time when the monastic sangha resided in one location during the monsoon so they didn’t damage the soil from walking after heavy rain.
In modern times, Vassa as a practice period has expanded from the monastic sangha to include the lay sangha. Laity often make formal commitments to meditate more or even to take on practicing with additional training precepts.

This 90-day intensive practice period also exists in Zen communities, where it is called “Ango,” a phrase which can be translated as “peaceful residency.” The timing, however, does vary a bit from that of Theravadin communities.
Event Description:
The full moon of the 8th lunar month falls on July 9th this year, but why wait? Come join us beginning July 7th and start your Monday with meditation, chanting, and sangha!
We will sit one meditation period of approximately 45 minutes, chant, and share tea (in-person only).
*Although this event allows online attendance, we would love to see you in-person if at all possible*

Benjamin's first encounter with Buddhist practice was when they stumbled across a Zen anecdote in second grade. He has meditated regularly since 2022 and has an appreciation for all forms of practice, drawing inspiration especially from Theravadin and East Asian traditions, which is part of what drew them to Red Clay beginning in 2023.
Cost There is no cost to attend this event.
