This is a hybrid event: in person at our Hospital Drive location, and also on Zoom at our regular Zoom link (click here). We begin at 7:30 and sit together for 40 minutes. After this Gareth will offer a teaching/ talk (see below for topics), then open up for questions, reflections and discussion.
Beginning on June 11, and running for approximately 2 months, Gareth will be teaching about breath meditation, providing guided meditations and practical guidance, and discussing the history and diversity of practice across different Buddhist traditions. Teachings will draw from both the Pali canon and South Asian traditions (eg Myanmar and Thailand) as well as East Asian traditions (esp China and Japan), as well as the commentarial and practice traditions that have grown up around them in different cultures, countries and times. Gareth will spend time on the Anapanasiti Sutta, the Visuddhimagga, and the influential writings of Zhiyi, especially his "Six Dharma Gates to the Sublime".
This series of talks will be followed with a series on "The Essentials of Buddhist Meditation", which is based on the seminal text of the same title by the Chinese Master Zhiyi. As for the series of talks on breath meditation, the talks are practical, accessible, and about how we can actually improve our practice and our lives.
Each talk will be self-contained and stand independently, so feel free to drop in occasionally and to not do so when you feel like it. And the talks will all be recorded so you can catch up on any you miss.
